SiSustainable can offer at distance or on-location support.

This training can range from constructing existing machines to a complete technology transfer including the mathematics involved in redesigning the Prometheus type solar concentrator.

Concentrator Design

Each intended use of a solar concentrator can require small or large modifications to a basic design in order to supply the power and render it easy to use for the task in question.

SiSustainable can design, autonomously or in partnership, plans for new Solar Fire Concentrators, at new scales and for new purposes.

Application Design

Without an application to place in the focal point of a solar concentrator, it's just a really shiny and beautiful piece of artwork. Applications are required to make use of this energy.

SiSustainable can realize, autonomously or in partnership, plans for new applications and/or adapting applications to the Prometheus geometry.

Document writing

Whatever your business or organization, if you are launching a solar activity you may require well written documents.

SiSustainable can assist in writing your investment or sales pitches, grant applications, website material etc.

Confidentiality

We develop the core solar technology in Open Source.
By this we mean the part of the technology required for applications relating to sustenance and basic energy access. This technology is already in the public domain.

We realize that complex development and applications may not be possible to develop in Open Source. We respect the confidentiality of our partners.

Productions

SiSustainable has recently launched into producing small content films for our own projects, such as to talk about our work on Solar Fire.

Though we are not expert film directors of editors, having no formal training of any kind, we have gone head first into this communication based on the strength of Open Source software.

To go from one format, frame rate, codec, etc. to another we use FFMPEG, which is a powerful Open Source transcoding tool that supports essentially everything. For editing we use Cinelerra which is a sophisticated Open Source non-linear editor that supports frame by frame editing high definition editing, infinite tracks, 6 sound channels, OpenGL and many video-audio effects.

So, before spending large sums for film editing solutions, feel free to inquire whether your project can't be easily supported with Open Source tools that we can implement or that you can easily learn with a bit of support, from us or elsewhere in the Open Source community.

Web Base

What we call a web base is a CMS, such as Spip, with a basic graphic design and navigation.

Since all contributors can directly add and edit their own content, the web base can be kept up to date and easily grow indefinitely, in terms written content.

A web base allows a web presence in the short term and the entire web creation to be accomplished in steps with intermittent phases of refinement.

However, from this basis more can be added.

For instance, the graphic design of a website can often be the most costly and delicate. So it can be a good idea to have the graphic design done by a graphics artist you appreciate, or even use your own photos and drawings. In both cases the work can be easily integrated into the web base.

Likewise, for the creation of custom made Javascript, Flash, php or other code for making animations or special web applications, these components can be realised by a specialist in the area and then the work can integrated into the web base.

For instance, SiSustainable is specialized in Spip and designing coherent web bases, and it's not necessary we take care of everything. For special problems, a specialist working on that specific problem is usually the surest way to go.

To migrate to a new server simply requires transferring the files to the new server and then changing the DNS records to point at the new servers IP.
We do not need DNS access, but someone will have to change the DNS at some point.
If not on our server, we would require SSH access the time of the transfer. The password can be changed after. Since the DNS is only changed after the migration, there is little security risk.

CMS
To migrate to a new Content Management System usually requires rebuilding the site from scratch. Any element, such as colour, images and text, can be taken from the old site, but since nearly all the code must be rewritten it's also the opportunity to improve or radically change the design.

Preserve old addresses

A common problem in site migration is that the addresses of the new pages aren't the same as the addresses of the old pages. So any link anywhere on the internet, in emails, or in documents, to the old pages will break. This is inconvenient for visitors but also search engines will assume you've deleted all your old pages and remove them from their search results, as well not consider all the old links to your website in evaluating it's importance, and may even conclude you've plagiarized yourself (and so it can take a lot of time for your pages to reappear where they were).

ModRewrite
The solution to pages that change location (in Apache Linux based servers) is found in a utility called ModRewrite, which can be used to point any address to any other address, in the case of site migration anyone going to any old addresses will automatically fall on the new page. Search engines will also be automatically directed to the new pages and simply note that the same page has changed location.

Not an html redirect
ModRewrite works at the server level (before any page has been downloaded) and is completely different than an html redirect which will only activate after an html file has been downloaded. Html redirect is useful if the idea is to display one file after another (as it allows a time delay), but for site migration it requires all the old file structure being preserved causing disorganization, inconvenience for visitors, more design problems, and may have no effect on search engines.

Notes on ModRewrite
ModRewrite is controlled from htaccess fils (a basic configuration file for the site), which can be placed at the root of the site as well as in subfolders. -ModRewrite can work on individual pages (or "request" for pages, since the old files are no longer there after the migration), or on types of files, such redirecting everything that was in one folder to a new folder, adding or taking away endings, etc. In brief ModRewrite is a space between the visitor and and the actual files, in which any file can be made to appear under any url (web address).
ModRewrite can easily be used to create contradictions or never ending loops, in which case the server delivers error messages or stops working entirely. It is best to test on a local machine before uploading to a server.
